Ammonium chloride is used as a fertilizer, either on its own or in compound fertilizers. It has some advantages over other nitrogen fertilizers for rice, as nitrification is slower, reducing nitrogen losses and increasing yields. While commonly used for rice, ammonium chloride has also been successfully used on other crops. It is produced commercially using either a dual-salt process combining sodium chloride and ammonia, or a direct neutralization of ammonia and hydrochloric acid. Properties of ammonium chloride include a nitrogen content of 26% and solubility that increases with temperature.
