What is the difference between luer lock and luer slip syringes?

A Luer fitting is a standardised system across small-scale fluid fittings in order to make leak-free connections between two parts. These are common across medical and laboratory instruments. They are described as having a male-taper fitting and its mating female part.

Syringes are one of the most common instruments using the luer fitting system. The male luer connection fits the female needle which either screws into it or fits tightly on top. These can be split into two varieties by the connection type: locking or slipping.

Locking ‘Luer-Lok’ style are more secure, the needles are inserted into the syringe and twisted to form a locked connection. This ensures no liquids can leak and prevents accidental removal of the needles.

Slipping ‘Luer-Slip’ style are quicker to fit, requiring a simple push of the needle into the syringe and ready to go. Luer-slip syringes can also be called ‘luer fitting’ syringes.

The syringe needles, if stated have a luer lock fitting, can be used with both syringes with Luer Lok and those with Luer slip fittings.
